Dog Bed / Tunnel / Table Prototype

Making a barrel shape for this dog bed, like I initially wanted to do, isn’t going to work out. I thought of solutions on how to make the cylinder shape with wood, but couldn’t think of how to make the entrance holes alongside it. After thinking on it, I decided a disassemble-able design would work better as a production object.

It got obvious to me that I needed to work on my graphic design skills for my papers, so I decided to make an IKEA style instruction manual for the bed to practice my skills, and to feel like the project is complete enough to be sold in stores, instructions and all.

I made the frame shape out of cardboard and chopsticks to see how the form would look.

The design would use straps or tubes sewn into the upholstery to keep it’s form next to the frame.

Seeing it like this, I think a good way to finish it would be to paint it multiple colors, matching the houndstooth fabric, changing colors with each edge. I’ve seen this kind of coloring in Memphis furniture design, continuing the inspiration from the form/function to how it looks on the outside.
